How Sound Healing Can Support Your Autonomic Nervous System.

Updated: Feb 22

Are you looking for a less physical treatment, but one that eases tension in your muscles and joints?

I have been a bodyworker over 28 years, I have offered my skills and intuition in various massage modes, including swedish and aromatherapy Massage. Over the last year, I have incorporated the sound healing into my shamanic bodywork treatments. I have been offering these since I moved to Totnes, in Devon ten years ago.

I am now offering sound healing in addition to Shamanic Bodywork treatments. I am using tuning forks to ease tension in my clients, so the muscles soften, and I can go deeper with intuitive touch. I also been working with singing bowls, chimes, and tibetan bells, to create a sound bath for my clients. The results have been amazing.

I was inspired to offer the sound since working with adults with special needs in my part time job, where I offer wellness sessions on a weekly basis.

All the clients say thy sleep better and find the sound relaxing, helping them to relieve daily stresses and strains.

It has been discovered by Stephen Porgess in his research, that music, singing, humming, have a positive effect on the autonomic nervous system. This system regulates the fight flight or freeze response. He discovered that the vagus nerve, which is part of the autonomic nervous system, is connected to the vocal cords and muscles at the back of your throat which pass through your inner ear.

He says that:

"We come into the world wired to connect.

The nervous system is our personal surveillance system

We humans are meaning making beings

What begins as wordless experiencing of neuroception drives our lives."

He goes on to say that:

"That the autonomic system has two branches

 1 Sympathetic

This is found in the middle part of the spinal cord. It’s the pathway that prepares us for action. It triggers the release of adrenaline, the flight or fight response.

2 Parasympathetic

Branch leads to 2 pathways found in the vagus nerve.

From the brain stem it travels in 2 directions, down through the lungs, heart, diaphragm, and stomach., and upwards to connect to the neck, throat and eyes and ears.

Here are some tips on how to befriend the autonomic nervous system.

We can map our personal responses and patterns by doing some practices.

Practices lead to tracking, the practices become intentional, they tune and tone the A.N.S

Leading to safety and connection

Reflexology increases vagal tone and decreases B.P

Rub soles of your feet in short strokes, stretch toes back and forth.

Mediation regulates the A.N.S

Exercise walking, yoga, massage- lowers sympathetic nervous activity, and controls parasympathetic pathway ie vagus nerve.

Bio fee back – helps control certain involuntary body functions like heart rate and breathing to help pain and anxiety.

My clients have benefitted from the new style of bodywork I am offering, here is a testimonial,

After a brief ten minute encounter with Belinda I  knew I'd met someone with a true healing skill and I wanted to experience more.

"I met Belinda at an event and experienced "taster" head and shoulder massage. Her manner was kind and caring and she used her tuning forks to vibrate sound through my shoulders. I literally felt tension drain from my body and felt quite emotional, despite the public setting and brief duration! 2 weeks later I set up a full 90 minutes session. "
